On October 7th, 2018, our class had an absolutely intense debate regarding our current topic in Media and Information Literacy, which was all about the traditional versus new media, and the controlled versus free media.

There were a total of 4 teams and each one had to defend their chosen topic. For the 1st half of the entire subject, the battle between the traditional and new media commenced. The 2 groups were called upon in front of the class to prepare for the debate. Once everything was settled, the fight between the two finally began. At first, everything seemed very calm and methodical, but after a few arguments thrown here and there, the class was instantly filled with noise created by the two teams. Members from each group simply wanted to express and impart what they liked to say to truly fight for their side. At this point, even some of the students from the audience wanted to share something and fight for what they thought was better between the two.

Nonetheless, the debate between traditional media and new media had to end in order to give way for the next competitors, which were between the controlled and free media teams.

I was a member of the free media group and I'd say that we held up very well against our adversary. Our group was able to prepare thoroughly prior to the debate. We were able to look up and research a lot of valuable and factual information regarding our topic and thought about the several strengths and weaknesses present within free media. Because of this, our group was backed up with great information that could support our claims during the debate.

When the formal discussion between the free and controlled media came, everything went pretty much according to plan. Our group was able to convey what we wanted to address and we made sure that nothing was left unsaid. In terms of our rebuttals, we made sure that we were not pulling random and unnecessary information out of nowhere, but instead, properly countering the opposing group with claims that were supported with factual data.

One example of the statements we were able to address was that free media is much better compared to a controlled and restricted media, because with free media, individuals have the ability to easily access a ton of valuable and amazing information at hand. Through free media, every single person living within a community has the power to speak freely and express what they want to say and impart. Also, with free media, the government and its people can be truly transparent with one another regarding the different things occurring within their society and country, whether that may be good or bad.

Definitely, through this amazing and fun debate, we were able to gain a lot of great information about these topics and lessons. We learned how to enhance our ideas and knowledge so that we could become  extremely more aware of the world that we are currently living in and the occurrences that are transpiring within it. By being educated, we can become more intelligent, smarter, and decisive in how we behave within our communities.
