#EmpowermentTechnologies: Debate 2.0

Yet another successful debate had taken place on the 17th of October 2018, and this time it was all about, whether information literacy was useless or not, and, whether using the internet is much better compared to the library, in terms of gathering and gaining information.

The whole class was segregated into 4 different groups with each one having their own specific topic to defend. The first 2 teams were given the task to battle against each other. They discussed about whether information literacy is important or not. The next 2 groups, on the other hand, battled and fought about which one was better between the library and the internet.

For the first set of teams, honestly, it felt like it was absolutely hard to defend the side that information literacy is indeed utterly useless. To be quite frank, in my opinion information literacy is an extremely important and significant ability the we, humans, need to use in order to deal with valuable information and data scattered all around the world that we are living in. Surprisingly, in the end, their group was actually able to win the debate. They were truly great at giving out the reasons and explaining why information literacy is not that important after all. Basically, they emphasized more on logic and reasoning. Props to them because they were really able to give an outstanding argumentative discussion.

For the following set of groups, which I was a part of, we mainly addressed why the internet was way better for utilization in terms of learning and gaining knowledge and information. We essentially pointed out that libraries are becoming more and more obsolete, ever since the internet was born and introduced to this world. Because of these major advancements and changes in technologies, the way we interpret, analyze, collect and handle information has never been the same. We are able to grasp  and acquire knowledge and data at a click of a button nowadays, compared to the more traditional methods in the past, which was extremely slow and inefficient. Because of the internet, we are also able to spend less time and effort in the expense of learning newer things about our world. We are ever evolving and changing, and at this very moment of time, it is just right to leave what is in the past, and transition into the modern age.

In the end, everything worked out perfectly for all students in the class. The entire activity was a huge success and it truly made everyone think and ponder even more about our current discussions and lessons in Media and Information Literacy. Truly, it was a fun, enjoyable, and informative debate!
